Trendline Charts: Sat's top 5 charts for investors

Welcome back to Trendline!

Let’s dive into today’s top 5 charts for investors 👇️

1) Stripe vs Adyen: Stripe’s private valuation is up 31% from Jul-24, to $91.5bn, and is close to the $95bn valuation peak it saw in Mar-21. The gap b/w Adyen and Stripe valuation has widened again, after getting very close in Mar-23.

In 2024, both processed similar volumes of payments (Adyen: $1.33tn, Stripe: $1.4tn), though Stripe payments volume grew much faster, 40% YoY compared to 24% for Adyen.

2) Competition in US ad-supported streaming: Avg. CPMs for ads on video streaming services in US have dropped over the last few quarters (lots of competition in the market). Now that Amazon Prime video is also launching its Ad tier - this trend is likely going to continue.

3) American households have changed: By 2015, single-person households became the most common household type, making up 28% of all homes—an inversion of past trends.

This shift stems from several factors. Population growth since 2000 has been concentrated among those over 60, a group more likely to live alone due to widowhood or empty nests. Meanwhile, declining birth rates have reduced the number of households with children.

Economic shifts also play a role. Higher earnings, particularly among women, have made independent living more attainable. Coupled with trends of marrying later or not at all, these changes have fueled the steady rise of single-person households.

4) Americans don’t love OJ anymore: America’s consumption of orange juice has fallen steadily over the last 25 years!

While you’d expect that health concerns over sugar consumption and changing breakfast habits is behind this trend, rising prices has also played a key role.

5) Almost all commercial ships are made in China, Korea and Japan: Very interesting chart with lots of takeaways:

  • UK produced 80% of commercial ships in 1892. Now its 0%

  • China, Korea and Japan produce almost all commercial ships today (this data is 10 years old - I am sure China’s share has risen since)

  • US’s ship production during the 2 world wars was impressive! Now their share is also ~0%
